Karibu The Bazaar
Video- & Photography Exhibition
Kamata Makati / Capture The Moment
Join us on Saturday 18 January at The Bazaar to meet Guillaume Balois, the artist behind the Kamati Wakate Exhibition, and let him take you on a 12 year long journey through Zanzibar.

Guillaume first arrived on Unguja in December 2011, eager to explore Zanzibars trade winds and driven by a passion for visual arts, music, and storytelling. In 2014, he founded ZanziFILMS, a creative platform dedicated to showcasing photography and films produced in Zanzibar, and eventually extended to East Africa.
Zanzibar grows rapidly, with increasing diversity, businesses, and tourism. The authenticity of its essence is often overshadowed by commercial promotions of hotels, safaris, weddings, and other festive events. Unfortunately, it seems general public infrastructure, wealth distribution, and authentic, locally engaging and responsible projects have not kept pace with this growth.
Kamata Makati ( Capture the Moment) exhibition highlights the evolution of the Zanzibar Archipelago over the past 12 years in still photography and moving images. To divert from the vibrant and contrasty colours that are often used in visuals showcasing Zanzibar, Guillaume takes a unique direction by shifting away from the saturation and contrasts, causing your eyes to focus on other elements and giving a unique view on the islands. The evening will feature the screening and discussion of three short films and Guillaume's recently launched photography book “ZANZISTARS”.
Through filmmaking and photography, Guillaume and his partners Modi Peru and Sharida Diaz Gautier explore different aspects of contemporary Zanzibar, capturing its stories with a mix of creativity and adventure. Whether guided by a clear script and storyboard or embracing the freedom to spontaneously reflect on their surroundings, their work offers a unique perspective on the island's vibrant life.
